Isn’t Family Important?

Last weekend I got an idea for a website. I was in the shower… For some reason I always get really great ideas while I’m taking a shower, not sure why.

Anyway, I thought it would be cool to make a family tree website but put more of a web2.0 social networking kind of spin on it. Try to make it sort of viral so that family members could pass it around and have other family members fill in blanks for their parts of the family. It could show how everyone is connected, or just how a specific family is connected, or show a three dimensional tree structure, and on and on.

^not my family

I was pretty excited about this new concept and I was actually thinking of fleshing it out and putting more ideas down on paper before I forgot all about it (which is what happens to most of my ideas sadly).

Then yesterday I’m reading this article I found on Digg about Googles new App Engine. TechCrunch did an article about their experience building an app with Googles App Engine. They created a sample app as a demo. It’s basically a 2 page voting engine and they used CrunchBase as the source of their vote subjects. So, I’m playing with the vote engine and I start clicking on some of the company names that I had never heard of. I clicked on Mahalo and found a neat little search engine, and then I clicked on Geni!

What the hell is this? I wondered after Geni.com loaded. It was almost exactly what I had just thought up a couple days ago! So back at CrunchBase I took a look at their Geni page. Low and behold it is pretty much the same thing I had thought up. Then at the bottom of the page I see the big kicker!

There is an article on TechCrunch about Geni getting a $100 Million Valuation!

Damn it! Something so simple that I just thought it up in the shower and some other jackass makes a $100 Million company out of it!

The moral of the story

So what’s the moral of this story? Is family really that important? Should I stop spending time with mine and just actually bring one of my six hundred ideas to fruition? Is it really that easy? Or should I listen to my family, my wife specifically, and just keep my mind on one thing? Should I forget about the four new ideas I get every week and just concentrate on the development of Web and Now?

I don’t really know the answer (42), but I do know that the longer I sit on my ass, the more I miss out on million dollar valuations.
